To know your camera
As a street photographer you need good basic know how about your camera – so that you in a few seconds can shift settings. Here are the most important settings to keep track of.
Shutter speed
On the street people constantly move around and you need a shutter speed that allows you to “freeze” time or your motifs will be unsharp. For that you need no slower speed than 1/250th of a second.
Aperture
This is your artistic tool and how you set it depends on your intentions. Large aperture gives you unsharp background. A small aperture gives you longer or deeper Depth of Field (zone where the image is sharp) and if you want a sharp backdrop.
ISO
Your ISO should be high enough to achieve the shutter speed you need at the aperture of your choice. Don’t be afraid of higher ISOs, some of the “noise” that comes with high ISO is fixable in postproduction. As a street photographer you often allow ISO of 6400 and higher.
Challenge: Today’s mission is to try different shutter speeds, both shorter (1/250 and higher) and long shutter speeds (1/30 and slower). Compare your results. At slower shutter speeds it’s hard to keep your camera steady enough. Try supporting it on a rail, on the ground or something else to rest it at.

Att kunna sin kamera
Som gatufotograf behöver du ha så goda kunskaper om din egen kamera, att du snabbt kan anpassa inställningarna efter ljuset. Här är det viktigaste.
Slutartid
Eftersom folk ofta är i rörelse vid gatufoto, bör du ha en tillräckligt kort slutartid för att frysa rörelsen, annars blir motivet oskarpt. Du bör ha minst 1/250 s för att undvika rörelseoskärpa.
Bländare
Detta är ditt konstnärliga verktyg och hur du ställer in kameran är en smaksak. Stor bländare ger dig oskarp bakgrund. Liten bländare ger skarp bakgrund.
ISO
Ditt ISO ska vara tillräckligt högt för att få den slutartid du önskar på den bländare du valt. Var inte rädd att gå upp i höga ISO. Mycket brus går att fixa i efterarbetet. Det är inte ovanligt att du som digital gatufotograf går upp till 6400 ISO eller mer.
Uppdrag: Dagens uppdrag består av att testa olika slutartider. Fota några bilder med kort slutartid (minst 1/250s) och några bilder med lång slutartid (längre än 1/30s). Jämför resultatet. Vid långa slutartider kan det vara svårt att hålla kameran stadigt. Ta då hjälp av ett räcke, marken eller något annat att vila kameran mot.
