To add dimension

To create a story demands more than just a nice motif. It needs contrast, relationship or/and supplements (in elements of image). Here are three basic tips on how to create a story.

Windows
Shoot through windows. Try to get both what’s happening on the inside and the reflection of the outside. When these two blend, magic can happen.

Mirroring and reflections
Besides windows and actual mirrors there are interesting reflections from polished metal or puddles. By shooting into those you get a nice perspective on events.

Lines
Leading lines into images help the onlookers to focus. This happens as your viewing very often subconsciously follow lines in or out of pictures. The image (“Small town back lit”) shows this as all different lines in the picture leads from the edge into the “vanishing point”. (This specific picture I took with a cell phone, the lines are always there, no matter what camera you use.)

Challenge – reflections: Shoot five images where you utilize reflections and mirroring. Let your fantasy lead you, using puddles, display windows and ordinary mirrors.

Att skapa dimension

För att skapa en berättelse krävs mer än bara ett motiv. Det krävs att saker som står i kontrast till varandra, förhåller sig till varandra eller kompletterar varandra. Här är tre enkla metoder.

Fönster
Fotografera in genom fönster. Försök få med både det som händer innanför fönstret och reflektionen av det som händer utanför. När dessa blandas kan magi uppstå.

Speglingar och reflektioner
Förutom fönster och rena speglar kan du få intressanta reflektioner från till exempel vattenpölar eller polerade metallytor. Genom att fota speglingen kan du få nya intressanta perspektiv.

Linjer
Linjer i bilden kan hjälpa ögat att hitta rätt. Ögat följer nämligen undermedvetet linjerna in mot bilden. Bild: “Small town back lit”, det finns linjer i alla delar av bilder som leder mot horisontpunkten/vanishing point. (Den bifogade bilden är tagen med en enkel mobilkamera, linjerna finns alltid, oavsett kamera.)

Uppdrag: Speglingar. Ta fem bilder där du utnyttjar reflektioner och speglingar i din bild. Låt fantasin styra och ta hjälp av exempelvis vattenpölar, skyltfönster och speglar.
