#12 Wanna let go of focusing?

Zone focusing – abracadabra for a street photographer

What if you just could lift your camera and shoot, always getting sharp pictures? Without fiddling with your auto focus. Would be nice, wouldn’t?

The trick is called zone focusing and this is how it works:
Set your camera focus manually at 6 feet, using a wide-angle lens (18-35mm) and aperture between f/8 and f/16. Now you get a Depth of Field (DoF) that ranges from your 6 feet and up. The smaller aperture (higher number), the larger Depth of Field.

Challenge: Flip your auto focus into manual, set focus at 6 feet. Aperture at f/16 and use a wide-angle with focal length somewhere close to 30 mm. Your shutter should be no less than 1/250th of a second and ISO has to adjust accordingly (I do it with automatic setting). Get out in daytime and take a bunch of pictures. Sharp, are they? Practice and you’ll get the hang of it.

Tänk om du bara kunde lyfta kameran och bränna av ett skott, och alltid ha skärpa i hela bilden. Utan trix med autofokus. Visst hade det varit skönt?

Knepet heter zonfokus. Det går ut på att du manuellt ställer kamerans fokus på två meter. Därefter får du allt i bilden skarpt från två meter och bortåt. Coolt va? För att detta ska fungera krävs det att du använder vidvinkelobjektiv (18-35mm) och bländare mellan f/8-f/16. Ju mindre bländare och brännvidd, desto större fält i skärpa.

Uppdrag: Slå om kamerans fokus till manuellt läge, och ställ in skärpan på 2 meter. Sätt bländare f/16 och se till att du har brännvidd på  ca 24mm. Slutartiden måste vara minst 1/250 s och ISO får justeras tills exponeringen ser ok ut. Gå ut på stan och lyft och tryck av ett antal bilder. Blev de skarpa? Med lite övning sitter detta snart.
