#16 Does your gear matter?

Thoughts on basic gear 

Do spend more time knowing the gear you already have, than chasing new and “better” stuff. The first will evolve your photography more. Apart from that, here are some thoughts on cameras and such.

Lenses to prefer
There are no right or wrong when choosing your lens. Many of us street photographer prefer wide-angle lenses, out of one reason. With it you can both get really close AND get more of the environment in your image.

Light sensitive lenses
The fixed lenses (non-zoom) are often both more light sensitive (larger aperture) and more price worthy. The larger aperture in these makes it easier to shoot in lesser light conditions. A fixed 35 mm f/1.4 or 50 mm f/1.4 are my preferred lenses.

Cameras with high ISO capabilities
Modern cameras most often are built to function well, even during bad light conditions. They use high ISO, which you need at night and in otherwise lesser light.

When your billfold speaks, remember:
“The pianist doesn’t get any better just by shifting instrument.”

Tip: Google the phrase “phoneography” to see some really good pictures taken with cell phones only.

Tankar om basutrustning

Lägg mer tid på att lära känna din kamera, än tid att jaga nya prylar. Det kommer utveckla ditt fotograferande mest. Det vi tar upp nedan är ändå bra att känna till.

Gatufotografens objektiv
Det finns inget rätt eller fel vid val av objektiv. Många gatufotografer har dock fastnat för vidvinkelobjektiv, för att få med mer av omgivningen och samtidigt komma närmare.

Ljusstarkt objektiv
De fasta objektiven (de utan zoom) är ofta ljusstarka och prisvärda. Det stora ljusinsläppet gör det enklare att fotografera i sämre ljus. Ett fast 35mm f/1.4 eller 50mm f/1.4 är våra personliga favoriter.

ISO-tålig kamera
Moderna kameror klarar utan problem av att fotografera i höga ISO. Det behöver du om du fotograferar kvällstid och i dåligt ljus.
